Spring 2021 Update

Updated: May 27, 2021

This past year has forced all of us to be more conscious of our health. We understand homelessness is a public health issue and, by helping families remain in their homes, we are working to keep them as safe and healthy as possible. Our role in the health and well-being of our families has become more apparent as the pandemic continues because the working poor cannot afford to be sick.

One of our hardworking moms, "Alina," was recently hospitalized with an infection following childbirth. Single moms like Alina, in low-paying or "essential" jobs, do not receive adequate paid sick leave, much less paid maternity leave, to weather emergencies such as this. Our rental assistance helps keep family in their home, so she can focus on recovering instead of worrying about an eviction notice. In addition to financial support, North Star of Chester County recently provided her with grocery gift cards and cleaning supplies.

Essential workers cannot work from home, making the possibility of a positive COVID case more likely. "Natalie" was recently in this position. In addition to worrying about how her asthma may affect her recovery, she worried how she would stay current with her rent while missing two weeks of work. Without a safety net, families like Natalie's could be in serious jeopardy through no fault of their own. Natalie continues to receive our rental assistance and has recovered from her illness.

We were thrilled to learn that one of our program participants, "Lauren," was accepted into the Habitat for Humanity program and is one step closer to being a first-time homebuyer. After successfully completing the Housing Partnership of Chester County program, improving her credit score, and building her savings, Lauren achieved her ambitious goals. She begins her "sweat equity" this summer. North Star staff and board members plan to help her during the building process as well.
